Bob is happy to receive requests for custom work, and in fact, that’s most of his projects! This page lists a few things you will want to know in advance, in order to make the most of the first email to enable him to give you the best quote he can.

First, if you have a preference for a certain kind of wood, please include that. If you aren’t sure, but like darker or lighter woods, let him know that so he can pick accordingly. With customs, the more information you can give of your ideas, the better!  

What type of item do you want? Color of wood or stain? Do you want a special design like a carving or an inlay if that’s possible for him to do? Include photos, if possible. For memorial boxes, will a tile be added later, and if so, include the dimensions of it. For jewelry boxes, do you want a felted bottom, and if so, what color?

What sizes are you looking at? If it has to fit in a certain space, or needs to be a certain specific size, include those dimensions. If you like a certain style aesthetic, let him know! (Shaker, midcentury, traditional, modern, Scandinavian, etc) If you don’t know the name, but have a photo in mind, feel free to share it!

Next, budget. Do give him a budget range, so he can work with you to find the materials that will best suit, or offer suggestions to help get you your dream item within a price range you are comfortable with. Note though, these items are heirloom quality. Your grandchildren’s grandchildren will be passing these down further in the family. Do expect, for example, a range of $50-$150 for a jewelry box, depending on size and complexity.

He also does restorations! If you have an antique or vintage item that needs repair or is missing a shelf or a bottom has rotted out, feel free to send him photos and he can discuss further with you on whether the item can be restored in a period-appropriate way, or whether some updating can be done to make it a usable piece once again.
